differently earned the DEVIL'S NAME. When autumn hunter's moon is high and frosted starlight shines He might be listening for your step and watching all you do. Just respect the forest's peace, and all will go well with you. But harm the tiny creatures that share the piney home And woebetide you brother, if you walk the pines alone. ~ Lisa Golda-Shields THE LEGEND OF THE JERSEY DEVIL Few places can boast of local color anywhere as intriguing as the Jersey Devil, native to the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Two hundred and fifty years ago, settlers of the desolate stretches now known as the Pine Barrens first reported having seen a bizarre, elusive creature, reported to have been born to Mother Leeds in 1745. The most popular tale suggests the Mother Leeds child was born normal, but "transformed" moments after birth into a serpentine, bad tempered dragon like creature, who flew up the chimney, and off into the night. Whatever the fact or fiction about New Jersey's most celebrated local legend, it still provides chills around a campfire, and has been sighted as recently as in the 1950's |
